Tennessee women are having more babies, according to the 2004 birth rate statistics which the Department of Health released today/yesterday.
There’s been a one percent increase from 2003, with Tennessee resident births totaling 79,572. More than twenty-five hundred of the births in that total were twins.
But the birth rate has decreased in one important area, according to Sophie Moery, the communications coordinator for the state health department.
Over the past fourteen years we’ve been very pleased to see a decline in teen pregnancies. It’s actually gone down about six thousand since 1990. In 1990, teens accounted for just over eighteen thousand pregnancies. And now in 2004, they only accounted for just over twelve thousand. So we’re very happy about that change.
The report also includes the most popular baby names in 2004, with Emma and William topping the list. Other fashionable names for girls were Madison, Ashley, Isabella, and Savannah. The favorite boys names include Dylan, Jacob, Elijah, and Zachary.
Additional birth data is available on the Department of Health’s website at Tennessee.gov/Health.
