The original Emancipation Proclamation is coming to the Tennessee State Museum for just seven days early next year. The only way for any school to schedule a field trip is to enter a lottery.
The museum estimates it can handle 400 schoolchildren an hour. But even at that pace, demand to see the executive order that freed more than 3 million slaves is likely to be more than the museum’s usual scheduling protocols can handle.
Applications for a chance to plan field trips will be accepted through late November. The lottery is only open to groups from schools in Tennessee.
