Tuesday’s episode of This Is Nashville focused on a few of the free community resources that are available in our city, with some of the folks who help organize, supply and take advantage of these cost-free options. So, we thought we’d round up some of those resources, and a few others we weren’t able to touch on in the hour.
Little Free Libraries — You’ve probably seen these around. Our guest Michelle Somers put one in her front yard, then expanded the idea to bring book carts to three locations around the city. Looking for a place to snag a free book? Check out their map. Want to donate children’s books? Look into Book ‘Em.
Free Nashville Poetry Library — A free library that’s not so little. The collection includes poetry, zines and more.
Library of Things — As we explored in our libraries episode, the Nashville Public Library will lend you everything from musical instruments to tools, board games to cake pans, kettle bells to sewing machines.
Skate Library — Need some (non-car) wheels? Skate Nashville has you covered. And it’s co-directed by This Is Nashville producer Elizabeth Burton!
Nashville Community Fridge — Our guest McCall’s Maypop Farmstead supplies produce to this free fridge in North Nashville. It’s located in front of Elephant Gallery, and next door, Buchanan Arts also offers free after-school programs for area kids.
Buy Nothing Nashville — It’s one of several similar online groups — Pay It Forward is another — where users post items they want to give away, or things they need.
Free stores — Exactly what it sounds like! Two examples are the FreeStore, now in its third location, and The Store.
East Nashville Wind Telephone — Maybe what you need is not a thing at all, but something deeper, like a connection with the dead.
Health care — Here are a few free and low-cost health care options. Thanks for the tip, Alejandro!
