Texas-based retailer Academy Sports and Outdoors is building a 1.6 million square foot distribution center in Cookeville. This will be the company’s third distribution facility in the country and the first in Tennessee. The other two are in Texas and Georgia.
Academy Sports already has nine stores in the state, with a 10th coming soon to Memphis. Company CEO Rodney Faldyn says part of the appeal of Tennessee is its central location.
“This distribution center is really important as we continue to grow in the South, Southeast and continue to expand in the Midwest. This really allows us to launch our footprint from where we are today.”
The facility will break ground in the next few weeks and become operational in early 2016. It’s expected to add 700 jobs.
Almost all of Academy Sports’ more than 175 stores are in the South and Southeast.
