Senators John McCain and Barack Obama debate tonight at Belmont University. Some 3-thousand members of the media are expected to cover the debate, which has created a regular carnival of causes around the city.
Foster-care advocates staked 850 life-size cutouts on the lawn of the state capital, representing the kids who enter foster care every day. Cheryl Hultman says she shipped the cutouts from Washington.
“We thought that we could piggy back on this event with Nashville having the presidential debate here.”
She and many others. They’re jockeying for a piece of the worldwide spotlight. Health care reform is a popular topic and one that advocates say isn’t getting enough attention in the presidential campaigns. But other causes range from poverty to college affordability to clean coal technology.
While special interests may influence media coverage they will have little impact inside the debate hall. Questions from audience members in the town hall format have already been selected.
