Girls in Tennessee who have experienced child abuse will get extra help through a new philanthropy created by rock ‘n’ roller Steven Tyler and Memphis-based nonprofit Youth Villages.
Tyler is fundraising for the nonprofit on the anniversary of his hit song, “Janie’s Got A Gun.”
The song — about a girl who kills the father who abused her — overcame its sobering subject to rise high on the charts in 1989. The singer says he knows it hit home.
“When my song ‘Janie’s Got A Gun’ was released I was overwhelmed and inspired by the thousands of letters I received from my fans,” Tyler says in a new video that explains “Janie’s Fund.”
The fund arrives on the 26
th anniversary of the song, and right as Tyler prepares to release his first solo album.
The fund collects money for Youth Villages, which provides therapy and foster care for about 11,000 Tennessee children each year, and many more across 20 states. Of those children last year in Tennessee, about 2,000 were girls who had been neglected or abused, according to the nonprofit.

One donor to Janie’s Fund will be chosen to walk the red carpet with Tyler at his record release. But that’s just a perk, he says.
“By far, the greatest reward will be knowing that you’ve had a part in supporting a girl in need,” Tyler says.
