The Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor has divided Tennessee’s two Republican senators.
Senator Lamar Alexander said on the floor of the Senate Sotomayor’s political and judicial philosophy differs from his, especially in regards to gun rights. But he committed to voting for her confirmation because she’s “well qualified by experience, temperament, character and intellect.”
Alexander cued up a scene from 2005 when he said then-Senator Barack Obama and other Democrats shouldn’t have voted against Chief Justice John Roberts because of his political philosophy.
“Today it would be equally wrong for me to vote against Judge Sotomayor solely because she is not on my side on some issues.”
Alexander says the courts weren’t intended to be filled with judges on your side.
Senator Bob Corker said Wednesday he could not vote to confirm Sotomayor because she sees the Supreme Court as a policy making body in which laws are shaped by personal views.
