Senator Lamar Alexander voted for a stimulus package today that places rebate checks into the hands of many Americans. The Tennessee Republican says it was the kind of bi-partisan stand that Americans want.
“They don’t mind our having big debates on big issues about big principles like liberty versus security on terrorism. What they don’t like is playpen politics, where we bring out the charts and hire the campaign strategists and degenerate into what out to be in a kindergarten or a political campaign. Well I’m pleased to say that this is a good way to begin the year – the way this has worked out.”
Alexander praised the president and the House of Representatives for moving quickly on a stimulus package. He says the Senate version, which includes rebate checks for seniors and disable veterans, improves upon that bill.
Fellow Republican Bob Corker voted against the bill. Earlier this week, Corker called the various stimulus proposals a “political stimulus.”
