About 30 former residents of the homeless encampment, known as Tent City, just relocated to a church and motels. But, another move will likely happen in the next few months or weeks.
Homeless outreach workers and volunteers packed up dozens of homeless men and women living at an encampment in Antioch over the weekend.
“What’s that box of food is it good? I think it has ants in it.”
The city deemed the camp illegal due to code violations. Roughly half went to an East Nashville church; others to motels until another church can take them in. Many residents received a housing voucher after the flood, but are still waiting for their paperwork to get in order. The weekend’s move marked the third one since the original Tent City was flooded in May. Some, like a resident who goes by “Pops,” say it’s frustrating.
“We’ve been moved around from place to place so many times. Feel like a bunch of dog gone cows going into the slaughter barn.”
In the next few months, the homelessness commission and outreach workers hope to figure out a permanent solution as to where these displaced residents should go.
