Friday, the Department of Defense released the name of the fifth Fort Campbell soldier killed by an improvised explosive device earlier this month in Afghanistan. The Army had already released the names of the four other soldiers killed in the June 7th attack in the Kunar province.
1st Sgt. Robert N. Barton II of Roxie, Mississippi, was the final soldier to be identified. Barton was an infantryman. The 35-year-old had been in the Army half of his life, joining the service in 1993.
Amongst his commendations, Barton had already been decorated with two Bronze Star Medals.
Barton is survived by his wife Rebecca of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, his mother in West Virginia and his father in Ohio.
The four others killed on June 7, 2010, are Sgt. Joshua Lukeala of Guam, Spc. Matthew Catlett of Houston, Spc. Charles Jirtle of Oklahoma, and Spc. Blaine Redding of Nebraska.
