Nashville’s Cameron Middle School is undergoing a major overhaul. It was one of about a dozen struggling Tennessee schools that needed to come up with an improvement plan or risk being taken over by the state. The changes being made at Cameron could pop up in other districts.
Training May Change For Middle School Teachers
The State Board of Education is concerned middle school teachers in Tennessee are being stretched too thin and student performance, particularly in math and science, is suffering because of it. The board is considering changing the way middle school teachers are trained and licensed.
Another Move For Former Tent City Residents Likely
About 30 former residents of the homeless encampment, known as Tent City, just relocated to a church and motels. But, another move will likely happen in the next few months or weeks.
Nashville Charter School Officially Shut Down
Thursday afternoon, the Metro School Board officially dissolved Nashville Global Academy, a charter school that opened in the fall and has struggled since day one.
Antioch Residents Vent Frustration at Tent City Meeting
Some Antioch residents are upset they were never included in the decision to relocate a homeless camp to their neighborhood. Dozens showed up to vent their frustration at a three-hour town hall meeting Thursday night.
Flooded Tent City Residents Start Over
FEMA is helping flood victims by cutting checks for destroyed homes, whether they’re in Bellevue or Tent City. Homeless victims may not be replacing dry wall, but they still get money for the loss of their makeshift shelters that held bikes, beds, pots and pans. Re-location Of Tent City Residents Unclear
During the floods, a swollen Cumberland River washed away a homeless campsite in Nashville known as Tent City. Now, Metro’s Homelessness Commission and housing development agency, MDHA, are trying to keep track of and get shelter for Tent City’s 140 residents.
Metro Schools Using A Kind Of Educational “You Tube”
Metro teachers can now log on to a “You Tube” style website for help in the classroom. MNPS Tube, or “M Tube” as it’s called, is stocked with about 400 short videos of teaching methods that have proven effective.
Kids Draw Flood Memories
The scope of Tennessee’s historic flooding is hard for adults to fully comprehend. This week many school children have taken class time to interpret what they’ve seen on TV and experienced first hand. WPLN’s Anne Marshall has this story from East Nashville’s Lockeland Elementary, where kids are using art to make sense of what’s happened.
Luring Business Back
Tourism is one of the largest moneymakers for Nashville, bringing in more than three billion dollars a year. But in the days after the flood, tourists planning to visit the city started cancelling.
