MTSU Poll: Wide Support for Haslam Among Dems, Independents

More than half of Democrats like the job Bill Haslam is doing as Governor. A new poll from MTSU also shows the governor getting high marks among independents. Haslam wins support from 54 % of Democrats. With Independents, it’s 76 %.

Huffman: Clock Ticking on Race to the Top

Tennessee’s education commissioner says schools need to decide soon how to spend their Race to the Top money. The state won half a billion dollars from the federal government two years ago and all of it has to be spent by 2014.

TVA Taps Johnson as Next CEO

The Tennessee Valley Authority has picked former Progress Energy CEO Bill Johnson as its new chief executive. He replaces Tom Kilgore, who will retire as TVA CEO at the end of the year.

Timothy Demonbreun: Nashville’s Man of Mystery

Demonbreun Street is named for Jacques-Timothée Boucher, Sieur de Montbrun–better known as Timothy Demonbreun. His Nashville story doesn’t begin on a battlefield or a plantation. It starts in a cave, hidden below an industrial park off Lebanon Pike.

Medicare Requirement Drives Increase in HealthStream Earnings

Hospitals that get Medicare funding are now required to ask patients about the quality of their care. High performers get more money. Low-scoring hospitals can see a cut in their Medicare dollars.

Healthstream Acquires Sy.Med for $7 Million

Healthstream makes specialty software for hospitals and doctors. Its products handle everything from patient records to training. Brentwood-based Sy.Med’s software tracks the credentials of doctors and nurses.

Nashville Man Dies from West Nile Virus

A Nashville man is the first in Tennessee to die this year from West Nile Virus. The 70 year old died from the mosquito-borne illness last week. His name hasn’t been released, but the health department says he suffered from an ‘underlying health condition’ in addition to West Nile.

Biglari Says Cracker Barrel Board Chair Misrepresented Credentials

The largest shareholder in Cracker Barrel says the company’s board chairman has misrepresented his qualifications. The accusation comes as Sardar Biglari is trying for the second time to win seats on that board.

Voter Registration Approaches Four Million as Deadline Nears

The agency behind Nashville’s public art projects hope its fanciful bike racks and statues will soon be marked on Google Maps. Next month, the Metro Arts Commission will ask city leaders for approval to participate in the nationwide effort to include works of art on the online app.

Lawmakers Take Parole Board to Task Over Audit

Officials from the State Board of Parole faced a committee of angry legislators Wednesday. They wanted to know why officers continued to report on more than 80 parolees, even after they died.
