Lt. Governor Says Tennessee Tea Party In For Tough Time Challenging Sen. Alexander

Online University Gets $5M For Tennessee Recruiting Push

An online degree program adding an office in Tennessee says it will go from 700 students statewide to a couple thousand over the next few years.  Western Governors University has tapped a former vice president from Nashville State Community College as its first chancellor in the state.

Bats Disappearing As Fungus Spreads Throughout Known Hibernation Spots In Tennessee

A disease that has wiped out millions of bats in the northeast has now spread to every major Tennessee cave where bats are known to hibernate.  White-Nose Syndrome first arrived in 2010 in East Tennessee, where bats are now disappearing.

In Reversal, Tennessee Bars Serving Infused Drinks Won’t Be Targeted

Tennessee’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission has decided not to begin enforcing its new interpretation of a rule it said meant bars couldn’t “infuse” liquors for flavor using other ingredients like fruit.

Keeping A Tennessee Teacher’s License May Become Harder

Tennessee’s School Board signaled last week it could soon get harder for the state’s teachers to stay licensed.  Under the proposal, those with years of bad evaluations or low test scores would see their licenses expire, and have to work for renewal.

Tennessee Teacher Pay Change Draws Boos, Passes 6-3

The State Board of Education has agreed to rework minimum pay levels for teachers across Tennessee.  Drawing groans from dozens of teachers at a meeting Friday afternoon, the shift gets rid of scheduled raises after a decade in the classroom, effectively flattening salaries for many long-timers.

Lawyers Bristle At State Plan To Target Bars Infusing Their Own Liquors

Restaurants may have to take certain kinds of flavored cocktail off the menu under an old law the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission plans to start enforcing next month.  Some lawyers in the industry argue that’s not how the rule is supposed to work—but if they have to, they’ll ask lawmakers to change it.

State School Board Poised To Lower Minimum Required Pay For Some Teachers

A proposal before Tennessee’s Board of Education Friday to rework statewide teacher pay levels is drawing ire from Democrats, as well as the state teachers’ union.  The move aims to add extra pay for certain teachers.  But critics argue it’s an administrative approach to a change lawmakers would not support.
