When Taylor Swift and LL Cool J announce the Grammy nominations in Nashville next week, The Wannabeatles hope to hear their name. The Beatles tribute band was nominated last year, but lost…to Betty White.
The Wannabeatles earned a nomination for best spoken word album, for a compliation of memories from Beatles fans. Betty White walked away with the trophy, for her reading the audio book of her autobiography. Frontman Dennis Scott says he and his bandmates tried to take the loss in stride.
“We’re the only band or group that can say they’ve actually lost a Grammy to Betty White. What do you do with this dubious honor? We’re songwriters, let’s write about it!”
The result is a musical tribute called, amazingly enough. The Betty White Song.
The band made a video with a gaggle of Betty White lookalikes. They also sent the song to White’s agent, who loved it, but turned down their request to feature her in the video.
Dennis Scott entered The Betty White Song in several categories, including best music video, and even song of the year. While the entries are mostly for fun, Scott says he still believes in there’s a longshot chance.
“Well, our chances were pretty long before. I was surprised that we got as far as we did.”
The Wannabeatles will know for sure, when Grammy nominations are announced December 5.
