Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen says he hopes the White House is listening to his comments on immigration. He was part of a New York Times front-page story this week for pushing back against the Obama Administration’s agenda.
The White House has sued to keep Arizona from implementing its strict new immigration policy at the end of the month, saying it conflicts with federal law. The Arizona statute makes it a state crime to be an illegal immigrant and requires law enforcement to check for immigration status.
Governor Bredesen calls immigration “toxic” for Democrats, and he says if the administration is going to take on such a divisive issue, really do something.
“If you’re going to throw it open in an election year, at least be successful, throw it open, solve the problem and move on.”
Governor Bredesen is one of few Democrats speaking out. But after meeting with other Democratic governors over the weekend, Bredesen says his views are widely shared.
