Metro Councilman at-large David Briley will announce his candidacy in the race to be Nashville’s next mayor this morning on the steps of the courthouse.
Briley was previously considered a likely contender for either the vice mayor or mayor slot in 2007. His platform includes making Nashville’s streets safer and improving a struggling school district.
“I’m excited about the prospects for our community to continue to make progress and to transform itself into a city that is a unique leader in the Southeast…where we’re a center for ideas that are going to generate new jobs and new opportunities, both economic and social for all of our community.”
The name “Briley” is no stranger to Nashville politics. Briley’s grandfather was Metro’s first mayor and his brother Rob is a state House member representing East Nashville.
The 42-year-old Briley will face vice mayor Howard Gentry, fellow Councilman at-large Buck Dozier and environmental policy analyst Dave Pelton. Former Congressman Bob Clement is also a likely candidate.
