With the stroke of a gavel, the State Building Commission cemented new boundaries for a tourist development zone near downtown Nashville Thursday. Any additional growth in sales tax revenue within the 2.8 square miles will be put toward paying off a new downtown convention center.
21st Avenue was the original boarder to the West, but Metro Finance director Rich Riebeling says that’s been extended to Interstate 440.
“It extends the zone out West End Ave. The purpose for that is, specifically, there are a number of hotels that are going to be completely benefited by the creation of the convention center.”
The eastern boarder is now the Cumberland River. The zone carves out hospitals and residential areas that fall within the borders. Sales tax will not be increased within the zone. But the city will get to keep any additional sales tax revenues beyond the average growth in the rest of Davidson County.
