Nearly a month after the Covenant School shooting, a motive for the attack that killed six students and staff is still unknown. Although the investigation by the FBI and the Metro Nashville Police Department is still underway, Gov. Bill Lee and other elected officials are calling for writings left behind by the perpetrator to be made public.
Tennessee elected Republicans and some right-wing commentators have called for the release of the documents tied to the Covenant School shooting. Police Chief John Drake described the contents of the writings shortly after the shooting took place in late March.
“There was talks about the school. There was a map of the school. A drawing of how potentially she would enter and the assaults that would take place,” said Drake, referring to shooter Audrey Hale, who was born female, but used male pronouns on social media.
Gov. Lee tweeted that he’s spoken with Drake and was given assurance that the documents would be released.
Lee is expected to call lawmakers back to Nashville for a special session to address the state’s extreme risk protection orders. Lawmakers have said they’d like to see the documents before making any changes to state law.
