Artificial intelligence is blurring the lines between the analog and digital world.
While AI-generated art has been around for years, it has become incredibly popular within the last few months thanks to apps like Lensa, which allows users to turn their selfies into artistic avatars.
Artificial intelligence is able to create these fantastic works because it scrapes millions of photos from the internet that are then run through an algorithm to identify patterns and types of aesthetics. Anyone with an internet connection can create award-winning art pieces by inputting text prompts on sites like NightCafe or OpenArt.
AI-created images are so well done that it can be difficult to tell the difference between a drawing created by the hand of an artist or a computer within seconds.
On Thursday’s episode of This Is Nashville, Nashville-based artist Kelly McKernan said they can tell if a work was created using AI.
“I have a trained eye. This is what I do. I see an image, and I know immediately that a human did not make that. (AI-created art) is lacking soul. It’s lacking direction. But I don’t think the average person can really tell. Like I said, unless you start counting fingers,” McKernan said. “There’s this flatness. There is a kind of generalizing of styles, a big mixture of things without a clear direction.”
