A group that rarely gets much air-time in any kind of political race is the homeless community. They’re transient, disconnected and often don’t vote anyway. But the Nashville Homeless Power project has gained some traction in the political arena.
At a mayoral forum organized by the group, all of the candidates agreed to spend a night on the streets before Election Day. WPLN was invited to follow the mayoral hopefuls and document their experiences wandering the downtown streets, panhandling, and trying to get into the rescue mission. Blake Farmer compiled this report.
(Correction: In our original story, we said, ‘Dean heads toward Broadway to try his luck at panhandling.’ In fact, Karl Dean did not panhandle during his night on the streets. The candidate for mayor said he was uncomfortable asking for money when he didn’t need it. Both our audio version and our transcript have now been corrected. We apologize for the error)
