A proposal to ban abortions after the detection of a heartbeat has been on the agenda of Tennessee lawmakers.

It’s a divisive issue. But the main opponent might not be who you expect — Tennessee Right to Life.

During a recent hearing on
House Bill 108/Senate Bill 244, state Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, described the position taken against the measure by the state’s leading opponents of abortion as “one of the most surreal moments” of his career in the General Assembly.

Statehouse reporter Chas Sisk sat down with Nashville Public Radio’s Jason Moon Wilkins to explain their position — and what it means for other abortion legislation this year.
