The Vatican’s second-in-command received the Knights of Columbus highest honor last night.
Cardinal Tarcisia Bertone is the secretary of state for the Vatican. He is in town for the group’s annual conference this week.
Bishop William Lori presented the honor and praised the Cardinal for his down-to-earth touch with parishioners.
“His eminence has even been known to provide media commentary for Italian soccer matches.”
Cardinal Bertone conducted mass yesterday, urging the Knights to pursue ‘deep, spiritual lives.’
The Knights of Columbus is one of the largest Catholic service groups in the world.
The award Bertone received includes $100,000, which Bertone says he plans to donate upon his return to Rome.
Cardinal Bertone is the highest ranking Vatican official to ever visit the Nashville diocese.
