Chattanooga mayor calls for new gun regulations after second shooting in two weeks

In Chattanooga, three people are dead and 14 others were wounded after a shooting in the early hours on Sunday.

The Associated Press reports that the shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. at a nightclub on McCallie Avenue. Police believe multiple shooters were involved. So far, no arrests have been made.

While talking to journalists, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly described himself as a gun owner and an avid hunter but called for more oversight.

“Congress needs to do its job and pass commonsense regulations that will help stop this nonsense. That doesn’t mean taking guns away from responsible gun owners, but it does mean mandatory background checks.”

Two handguns were found at the scene including one with an extended magazine. That allows guns to hold more rounds.

Kelly says Congress should also prohibit these high-capacity magazines that allow gunmen to quickly harm a lot of people.

This weekend’s shooting follows multiple others throughout the country, including a shooting in Philadelphia that also killed three people and wounded 11. It also comes a week after an exchange of gunfire injured six people in downtown Chattanooga.
