Retiring Democratic Congressman John Tanner has offered a less-than full-throated endorsement of state Senator Roy Herron, the Democrat vying to replace Tanner in the U.S. House.
Tanner seemed a bit taken aback when asked about the race.
“I am interested, of course, in that race.”
Herron is the Democratic frontrunner. He has more than a million dollars cash-on-hand and has raised even more than that, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That puts him ahead of Republican Steve Fincher, who leads the Republican candidates in fundraising. Tanner says he plans to back Democrats running for office in one way or another.
“Mike McWherter is running for Governor. I am supporting Mike. And, of course, I will be supporting Herron for Congress.”
When asked about the extent of his assistance – Tanner said he would try give Herron what he needs. Still, his involvement remains to be seen.
Congressman Bart Gordon – who is also retiring – declined to comment on the race to replace him.
