Rutherford County commissioners overwhelmingly approved a proposal to increase property taxes earlier this morning. The 6.8% hike will be used to help balance a $390.5 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
District three commissioner Will Jordan voted in favor of the tax increase. He says there was no other option.
“In my opinion, we knew a year ago we were going to have to have a tax increase this year because there wasn’t any reserve left. Just — actually, our expenditures are going to be down next year from the current budget year, but we just don’t have the reserves to continue funding operations out of reserves.”
Rutherford county property taxes in the coming year will now be about $0.18 higher per $100 of assessed value than in the past.
The final vote was 17-4.
