In January, the Putnam County school board announced it would vote to phase out Cookeville High School’s International Baccalaureate program because of a lack of funding and resources.
The decision was made without input from Cookeville students enrolled in the academically rigorous curriculum or their teachers, according to high school junior Quentin Ding.
The school board delayed the vote, but students are still fighting to keep Cookeville’s IB program alive.
“Students care about what they’re learning, and they want to have agency over their curriculum,” said WPLN News education reporter Juliana Kim.
Kim and Quentin joined This Is Nashville host Khalil Ekulona on Tuesday to discuss the future of the IB program and the implications for the district if the school board ultimately decides to eliminate it.
