Bob Corker says he’s honored by the faith Tennessee voters placed in him
by sending him to the U-S Senate.
Corker took an early lead in East Tennessee and never lost it as polls closed across the state.
“There was a strong headwind working against us, but in the end the choice belonged to the good people of Tennessee. They ignored the distractions and distortions and instead focused on the different qualifications of two men, and they made up their own minds, and thank you very much for that.”
The one-time finance commissioner and mayor of Chattanooga faced a grueling primary race, and until the final weeks of the general election was locked in a dead heat with Congressman Harold Ford, Junior. That’s when Corker shook-up his campaign by bringing in members of Senator Lamar Alexander’s staff, namely Tom Ingram, to re-focus his efforts. The move paid off as Corker began to distance himself from Ford in the final week.
The Republican, who started a small construction business and became a millionaire, poured more than three-million dollars of his own money into the Senate campaign.
He told cheering supporters in Chattanooga he would do all in his power to live up to their faith in him, and he lead the crowd in applauding his opponent. Corker says Harold Ford, Junior is “obviously a talented young man, with a bight, bright future.”
