Tennessee Senator Bob Corker says the firing of eight U-S attorneys should have been a ‘non-issue.’ As for the job security of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, he says details should come to light when Gonzales testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee later this month.
“It does seem that every time the attorney general opens his mouth, he seems to have an unusual ability to shoot a hole in his foot. I don’t know that necessarily means he should be replaced.”
While at the state capitol (this morning/yesterday), Corker – a Republican – also took a chance while at the state capital to lay the groundwork for a possible Fred Thompson presidential campaign. Corker called the former Tennessee senator-turned-actor an “awe-shucks” kind of guy who could cut through the political haze in Washington.
“Our next president needs to be a great communicator with the complex issues we have in our country, our citizens and people around the world need to understand the direction of our country. Certainly Fred has an innate ability to do that, and we’ll have to see what his decision is.”
Corker says Thompson is more serious about a White House-run than his cool demeanor might suggest.
Senators Corker and Lamar Alexander are both in Tennessee this week on congressional recess.
