In his first nine months as a U.S. Senator, Repubilcan Bob Corker has opposed the Bush administration on energy, immigration, and most recently, healthcare for children.
Corker was in Shelbyville Tuesday, and said that he’s proud of his voting record even if it doesn’t sit well with his Republican supporters.
Expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program is the most recent and contentious issue Corker voted for, despite President Bush’s veto threat.
“In some ways I find their arguments very disingenuous, ok, and I thought the fact that they funded the program per the original budget this year with far less money than everybody knew would cause it to carry on, I just think they got off to a very, very bad start on the issue. There’s obviously been a lot of demagogueing (sic) and a lot rhetorical comments made.”
President Bush did veto the bill last week. The issue now is whether there are enough votes to override it among House members who take up the bill next week.
Tuesday’s stop in Shelbyville wrapped up Corker’s visits to all 95 counties in Tennessee this year.
