Corker Wants to Cap Spending Before Talking Specific Programs

Sen. Bob Corker makes his case for a spending cap to the Dickson Chamber of Commerce.

Tennessee Senator Bob Corker is meeting with groups all over the state during the August recess with an unusual message – ask less of government.

Members of the Dickson Chamber of Commerce lean in to hear Senator Corker over the restaurant noise at Ace Diner.

“Let’s realize we can’t ask government to do certain things for us, and let’s ask for less as a citizenry. Let’s face it, politicians basically do what you wish for them to do.”

Corker has been showing a slide presentation heavy on charts and graphs to all the groups he meets with this month. His point is to steer people away from hot button issues and toward putting a real cap on spending as related to the country’s gross domestic product.

“Let’s first agree as a country, what is the appropriate amount of money for the federal government to spend as a percentage of our GDP. Let’s have that debate first.”

Then, Corker says, the country can make the difficult decisions of which programs should stay and which should go away. As for the Senator, he’s not making suggestions yet. But he says he will introduce legislation this fall instituting a cap. Corker says it’s an issue he’d like to “own.”
