Although the Metro Public School Board already approved a plan to outsource custodial work, concerned parents and custodians plan to speak out Thursday at the Metro Council’s public hearing.
After the flood, many custodians put in extra hours cleaning up their schools. Freda Player is the Political Coordinator of the custodians’ union.
“It’s an insult to us that you praise us for getting schools back together in record time but yet you’re going to let us go. It doesn’t say that you truly value our service.”
Current employees can reapply for their jobs, but Player worries working the contracting company, GCA, will leave them living below the poverty line. In addition to taking a pay-cut, they will also pay more for health insurance.
Metro Councilman Sam Coleman says if the budget is refinanced and funds are rearranged, saving some of the positions is not out of the question.
