If you search for recordings of the mountain dulcimer, one name will appear over and over – David Schnaufer. After a short battle with cancer, Schnaufer died last week at the age of 53.
WPLN’s Andy Schienman first met him in 1996 at Bongo Java, where Schnaufer would come in for coffee and read the New York Times. With his grizzled beard, small black spectacles, button down long sleeve shirts and suspenders – he looked like someone from the late 1800’s. People at the coffeehouse would say, “Hey, there’s that dulcimer guy.” Andy Scheinman has this remembrance.
