Mayoral Candidate Karl Dean called a press conference at the little-known Clement Landport on Demonbreun Street this morning.
What once was planned to be the city’s hub for regional rail and bus lines now sits as an empty parking lot above the railroad gulch. Dean points out that his opponent, former Congressman Bob Clement, secured funding for the project, which was then named for him.
“This is an example of something where if you don’t think it through, if you don’t have a good plan, if you don’t understand the city in which you’re working in, it doesn’t work. This cost $4.6 million. That’s taxpayers’ money.”
Defending the unused landport, Bob Clement says he fully believes it could still be utilized as the area continues to develop. A spokesman says Dean’s negative tactics are the desperate attempts of a losing campaign.
Dean contends he’s not going negative. He’s found himself on the defensive for much of the past few weeks on an issue of property taxes.
In addition to today’s offensive move, Dean says his campaign will release a new TV ad this weekend that outlines the ‘differences’ between himself and Clement.
