A Democrat has entered Tennessee’s U.S. Senate race, just in case Lamar Alexander loses in the GOP primary.
Terry Adams is an attorney from Knoxville – a Navy veteran and a political novice. His campaign treasurer is the man who was pummeled by Alexander last election cycle – Nashville attorney Bob Tuke. He says Adams will run hard either way, but he hopes not to face the two-term incumbent.
“Ideally, from our perspective, he wouldn’t have to run against Lamar Alexander. Now, the likelihood of that – you and I both know – is not high.”
Alexander faces a primary challenger who is backed by the Tea Party. However, State Rep. Joe Carr has only raised a few hundred thousand dollars compared to Alexander’s $4 million haul just this year.
Recently, Tennessee Democrats haven’t had much luck statewide. Last year in the race against Sen. Bob Corker, the party ultimately disavowed its candidate for holding extreme views.
The filing deadline isn’t until April, so other Democrats could also jump in, but Adams does appear to have the tentative backing of the party.
“As a Navy veteran and small businessman, Terry is a compelling candidate,” writes TNDP spokesman Brandon Puttbrese.
