Dollar General posted another round of record sales in the second quarter. The Goodlettesville-based discount retailer says sales were up 10 percent over last year.
Part of that growth is driven by an aggressive expansion, including its first stores in California.
Dollar General is on track to open 50 stores in California by year’s end. Company executives think the nation’s most populous state could help the retailer continue its run of record-setting sales figures. In some parts of California, the company used retail space left behind by a defunct supermarket chain to open several of its larger stores, which feature fresh meat and produce. Rick Dreiling is Dollar General’s CEO.
“We made a conscious decision since we had that bigger footprint to put in the DG Pluses and DG Markets. Long term in California, like the rest of the chain, our commitment is to the Dollar General-the traditional store.”
Dreiling says he hopes to someday open more than a thousand Dollar General stores in California, which is how many the retailer already has in Texas. Dollar General is laying groundwork for that expansion. Earlier this year it opened a distribution center that serves its stores in California and other western states.
