Discount retailer Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, may have to pay up to $83,000 in fines for repeated safety violations.
The U.S. Department of Labor found that a Dollar General store in Georgia had blocked and locked exit doors and failed to inspect its fire extinguishers. A statement from the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the company was cited for the same violations in both 2014 and 2010, and has received 40 citations nationwide since 2009.
The department reprimanded Dollar General, saying the corporation appears to be not sharing safety information with all its employees.
“Dollar General has been repeatedly cited for blocked exits and electrical panels in stores around the country, but we continue to find these hazards,” Christi Griffin, a regional OSHA director, said in a press release.
But in a response, Dollar General said it is taking immediate action at its store in Georgia and plans to give additional training to employees on safety protocol. A spokesman noted that the store has nearly 12,000 stores nationwide — a huge number compared to the 40 citations issued in the past five years.
The company now has 15 days to pay the penalties, appeal the findings or meet with OSHA’s regional director.
