Farmers and farmland are central to Tennessee’s character and economy. According to the Tennessee Farm Bureau, nearly 40% of our state’s land is farmland — and more than 360,000 people in our state have jobs related to agriculture and forestry.
But Tennessee is rapidly losing its farmland, mostly to development. Once land is developed, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to turn it back to open space or workable land.
So, farmers, non-profits, and the state government are working to help farmers keep their land. This Is Nashville recently visited two Tennessee farmers making plans for the future of the properties their families have owned and worked for generations.
