Meharry Medical College may not have received as much stimulus money for research as other schools in Tennessee, but officials say it has saved dozens of jobs.
Vanderbilt University got the lion’s share of medical research grants – 154. Meharry was awarded 17. The money means 20-30 jobs saved and at least five more created.
Dr. Russell Poland is Meharry’s Vice President for Research. He says the grants help pick up the pace of current projects and jumpstart some others.
“It’s started new types of research that would not automatically have been funded right away. So this money really is an investment in all aspects of the research enterprise at Meharry.”
The new research includes studying uterine fibroid treatment and cardiovascular disease.
The money is part of $4.35 billion in grants the National Institutes of Health has distributed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
