A young farmer from Frog Jump easily won the Republican nomination in the 8th Congressional District race. Stephen Fincher captured roughly half the votes, with the rest split between his two main GOP opponents.
In November, Stephen Fincher will face Democratic state Senator Roy Herron. He’s not giving away much, but Fincher says he plans to attack Herron’s votes in the General Assembly.
“He has a record, a long record of state politics, and people are going to know how things have happened.”
Fincher has the backing of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Senator Herron has been sitting on more than a million dollars waiting for the general election.
The 8th District race west of Nashville became the country’s most costly House race, mostly because one candidate spent nearly $3 million of his own money on what was ultimately a failed bid.
Voter Mary Jeffrey shook hands with all three leading candidates and says Fincher got her vote.
“I know gospel singers and there’s some stinkers in the bunch. Steve Fincher ain’t one.”
Jeffrey says she believes Fincher would represent common folks. The political newcomer was the first to get in the 8th District race, even before long time Democratic Congressman John Tanner announced he would retire.
