First Lady Michelle Obama visited Nashville Thursday for the second time in the last few months. While Mrs. Obama’s first visit was to raise money for her husband’s reelection, this time seemed to aim squarely at rallying base supporters.
Mrs. Obama spoke before a jubilant crowd of several thousand, at a convention of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Opryland. She pushed the audience to get others involved in politics, and chided anyone who passes up a chance to vote, saying “salvation is not a once-a-week kind of deal… and neither is citizenship.”
“I’m talking about the tireless, the thankless, relentless work of making change. You know, the phone-calling, letter-writing, door-knocking, meeting-planning kind of work! That is the real work of Democracy.”
Mrs. Obama did not speak directly to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold her husband’s healthcare law. But as she was making her exit, someone announced the news from the podium, prompting hallelujahs, and a song: “Victory Shall Be Mine.”
