Democratic Congressman Harold Ford Junior of Memphis says the people of Tennessee are ready to see the end of a Republican majority in the U-S Senate.Ford officially joined the race for Bill Frist’s senate seat (today/yesterday) though he’s actively campaigned for several months and was the first to run television ads.
He will face State Senator Rosalind Kurita of Clarksville in the August primary. The winner will take on one of the three candidates vying for the nomination, led by Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker and former Congressmen Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary.
Ford says people across the state are unhappy with the government’s response to Iraq and the national debt.
“I don’t know many people who can make the case that they like the fact that we’re spending more than we have, that we don’t have a coherent plan on the ground in Iraq, that we have the same group of people who made the decisions on this war in charge in Washington. And frankly, if these guys lived in the real world, they would have been fired by now.”
Ford will host a fundraiser in New York (tomorrow/today) to add to his 3-million dollar campaign chest. He has been criticized for raising money out of state, but says his three Republican opponents would too if they could find people who support their bid for the U-S Senate.
If Ford wins he will be the first black senator from the South since reconstruction.
