After a seven-day trial, the former CEO of Comprehensive Pain Specialists was found guilty of a kickback scheme valued at $4 million by federal prosecutors.
The jury in Nashville
convicted John Davis on all counts. The prosecution says the 41-year-old abused his position and received illegal kickbacks for arranging referrals of durable medical equipment orders through Medicare to CCC Medical in Camden. Investigators also say Davis set up a shell company registered in his wife’s name to receive his share of the profits for the referred patients.
The head of CCC Medical, Brenda Montgomery, pleaded guilty in January and faces sentencing in May. During the trial, prosecutors showed
emails between Davis and Montgomery acknowledging the fraud and discussing whether to forge a dead man’s signature.
Davis helped grow Comprehensive Pain Specialists, based in Brentwood, to become one of the largest pain management chains in the South. The company was
co-founded by state Sen. Steve Dickerson, R-Nashville, who has never been implicated by federal authorities. CPS
abruptly shutdown last year without explanation, leaving more than 40,000 patients to find new providers.
