Nashville mayoral candidate David Fox has gone to the airwaves with another negative ad, though this one has a humorous twist.
It’s part spoof, part Barry-bashing. Fox drives a black Chevy Suburban at night, similar to Matthew McConaughey’s recent
ad series for the automaker Lincoln. Fox looks ahead while an inner monologue describes Barry’s time on the Metro Council as ineffective.
“To see where someone’s going, you got to look where they’ve been,” Fox says. “You had eight years, Megan, eight years to do…something.”
Fox says she “raised taxes” and “racked up debt.” Both claims are technically true, though the city only increased property taxes once over that time — which was
unusual compared to previous periods. And Fox has been
reluctant to say what spending he would have cut.
Asked if the ad implies Fox won’t increase taxes as mayor, a spokesman says only that, “he wouldn’t be looking to raise taxes.”
Fox’s last
ad featured his wife accusing Megan Barry of being too liberal for Nashville.
A spokesman for Megan Barry, whose
ads have remained positive thus far in the runoff, says Fox’s attacks don’t seem to fit with the “Nashville Way” he’s told voters he plans to protect.
