Tennessee House Republicans selected Glen Casada today as their nominee for speaker.
The Williamson County representative pledged he will be involved in recruiting and fundraising for House Republicans — tasks he’s well known for.
But, as speaker, he said his team is made up of Republicans and Democrats, who he wants to work together for Tennessee.
“I’m committed to continuing the economic prosperity, improving in education,” Casada told reporters. “I know they want that too, so they are welcome to come and help us attain that.”
He said he wants to see the House playing a bigger role in the creation of the state’s budget. And he said he’d also like to form more subcommittees, to give more lawmakers input in developing legislation.
“I think we need to increase the subcommittees,” Casada said. “It’s where the deep-dive is done; it’s where the hard research is done.”
This is not the first time Casada has run for the House speakership. Eight years ago he ran against Republican Beth Harwell and lost.
House Republicans also selected Reps. Bill Dunn of Knoxville for Speaker Pro Tem, William Lamberth of Sumner County as the majority leader and Cameron Sexton of Crossville as caucus chairman.
The House won’t cast official votes for speaker until January.
