Thirteen teachers from all over the world are wrapping up their semester spent in Metro Schools and studying at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College. Nashville is the first U.S. city to host this new teacher exchange program, promoting understanding between cultures.
The teachers are visiting from six countries including India, Israel and South Africa. They make up the first class of the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching. The thirteen teachers are taking graduate classes at Peabody and co-teaching in Metro Schools.
Paul Wilton is a biology teacher from South Africa. He’s at Hume Fogg High School and tries to share with kids what learning is like back home.
“I taught a grade 12 biology class of 60. I had 60 seniors in a classroom so I think that would be the one major difference.”
When Wilton returns to South Africa, he’ll be teaching at Oprah Winfrey’s Academy.
This Fulbright group wraps up in December, but new teachers from the program will be back next year.
