Doctors at Metro General Hospital delivered a very special baby this week. Rebecca Ann Coopwood is recovering at home with her mother. Her father, Dr. Reginald Coopwood, is back at work today as General’s CEO.
Coopwood says he wanted to show his confidence in the hospital, where more than 90% of patients have no insurance.
“I love my family and I wouldn’t put them at undue risk if what was delivered at the hospital was not the highest of quality.”
Coopwood says he could have come up with valid excuses to use another hospital, but wanted to set an example for other employees of Metro Government. Starting in January, General Hospital will waive co-pays and deductibles for anyone on the city’s health plan. Even with a discount, the insurance reimbursements would help offset the cost of caring for indigent patients and reduce the hospital’s need to ask the city for more money.
