An ammonia leak at a Tyson food processing plant caused firefighters to warn residents of Goodlettsville to stay indoors early Sunday morning while they responded.
An automated call went out around 6 a.m. to people who live in the area. Interstate 65 and U.S. Route 41 were also shut down and a nearby campground was evacuated.
A hazardous materials team from the Nashville Fire Department worked in coordination with Goodlettsville firefighters to deal with the leak. An all-clear message went out around 8:30 a.m. There have been no reports so far on whether there were any injuries.
Ammonia is often used in the refrigeration systems of food processing plants. Inhaling high amounts of ammonia can cause respiratory distress, though its smell is usually enough to warn people of the danger.
