Mobile devices and the software that goes with them are eliminating the need for many pieces of hardware like cords and adapters. One Nashville-based company is reacting by expanding into the software market.
If you have an iPhone or an iPad, there’s a good chance that your charger is made by Griffin Technology, a company that makes hardware and is now developing apps for both the iPhone and the iPad. In the last year they’ve released iTalk, a voice recorder and Crayola Color Studio HD, a drawing program. The Crayola app reached the top ten sellers in the app store.
Jackie Ballinger of Griffin says software is an exploding market, and they want in on it. She says the company is looking to marry the software with the products they are already known for making.
“The software really enhances the hardware experience, so the two complement each other really well, and opened up a new slew of opportunities for us as accessory manufacturers.”
While Griffin’s accessories are manufactured overseas, their software is developed in the Nashville headquarters.
Griffin is still producing hardware products. Just last week they released a device called Beacon, which helps turn your smart phone into a universal remote.
