Late Monday Governor Bill Haslam signed legislation that overturns a new anti-discrimination ordinance in Metro Nashville. The new law prevents local governments from imposing rules on private businesses that go further than state law.
Metro’s ordinance requires city contractors to comply with anti-bias rules that prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Socially conservative groups hailed Haslam’s signature as good for businesses, which will not have to deal with inconsistent demands from one county to the next.
The Human Rights Campaign issued a press release, calling the legislation “horrible,” and saying the governor “put discrimination ahead of the state’s values.”
