Students at Edison Elementary School in Antioch will begin getting H1N1 flu vaccines on-site Thursday. This is the Metro Health Department’s first vaccination push in a Metro school.
Health officials wanted to start with the city’s youngest students, which is why spokesman Brian Todd says they chose an elementary school to start.
“The other thing that we have seen over the past several weeks is a pretty sustained flu-like illness in both Antioch and the Cane Ridge areas.”
Todd says the Health Department will continue H1N1 vaccinations in schools as doses become available.
Nearly half of all Metro students have signed waivers from their parents allowing them to get vaccinations. But Health workers say they will not vaccinate children who resist, even if they have a permission slip.
The Metro Health Department has vaccinated 10-thousand people so far and could receive a total of 130-thousand doses in the coming weeks.
